Sunday Sketching- and more Halloween

Sunday sketches in the teeny-purse-Moleskine upon my knee...

And then this evening - we went up to Western WA to watch the daughter play in a dress-up Halloween orchestra concert...
The son dressed up all-Emo again...

(and here he is with an old friend from High School - also playing dress-up...)

And here is the darling-daughter - "normally", and as her Halloween alter-ego. :-)

The entire orchestra was dressed up pretty darn imaginatively....

It was a fun set - Phantom of the Opera, O Come Sweet Death, the theme from Psycho, Night on Bald Mountain, etc... Screaming, organ-pounding and lots of percussion...!

Overall, a very fun way to spend Halloween night!

Halloween Saturday -

Today seemed a day full
of costumed people -
A friend of mine stopped by this afternoon to show me her fancy-schmancy new corset on the way to trick-or-treating -

Fairy niece #1 (shown next to fairy niece #2) had an Alice-in-Wonderland birthday-tea party of awesome (I hope to see more pictures!)

And the son - who is normally clean-cut and fairly conservative - decided to try the Emo-route for dressing-up for a party tonight...

(here with his Blue Man Group buddy....)

...until he had to dress up even *more* for a Day-of-the-Dead dance number later on in the evening... So many sides and faces...!

Where-ever you are, I hope you have some awesome dressing-up in your weekend. :-)

Halloween Thursday -

When we were in Utah picking up my son and visiting family, one of the places we always like to go see is dear lizzie... (here shown with darling faery-niece of the same name. :-)

They are a fabulously, effusively eclectic shop... They also do some of the best Halloween decor around.

(I made everyone with me try on hats..)

Hope you have a fabulous holiday!

Music Monday - Inception

I took my son to see the last big-screen-IMAX viewing of Inception last week (he's got 2 years of pop-culture to catch up on!)  Being that it was my second time seeing it, I was more able to pay attention to the amazing soundtrack - the most moving of which is the finale climactic piece, "Time":

It's worth the 4 minutes and 42 seconds of listening time....

WIP Wednesday - homework...

Here's an enlarged and more detailed version of the thumbnail (for "loss") I was working on last week... Because of technical difficulties there's been no further critique, so I guess I'll leave this and work on the book I'm woefully behind on..

Music Monday - Take on Me (acoustic version)

This is a hugely poignant version of the Aha classic...

(but if you are in the mood for the more upbeat original - here's the Literal Video version :-)

Figure Friday -

Life drawing day -

20-minute segments of a single long pose-
(conte crayon is not the best thing for smallish faces)

-which I got bored of quickly, so I did multiple takes,

but it was crowded, so I couldn't move around much, so I also used multiple media. Some days I find conte the easiest to use with portraits. Today, charcoal pencils were better.

WIP Wednesday - homework -

Our last black and white assignment is supposed to be a personally meaningful piece centered around either the theme of 'loss' or 'dreams'.

Some of these are riffs on some previous sketches -

(this concept was totally lost on my young, single, male instructor... He was mystified.)

Here's a variation on the tree sketch...

I didn't get as far with this one - but this *is* a sample book cover that I totally want to finish at some point.

Belated Music Monday - plus reunions..

This past week, my husband and I went to retrieve our son who has been away from home the past 2 years serving a mission for our church.

(Here is Celtic Woman's version of 'Beyond the Sea' - which is a lovely reunion sort of song...)

It was wonderful to see him again. But our daughter was not able to take that much time off from school, so today I drove my son up to WWU to see her.

It was very gratifying to watch. :-)

It's great having them both at hand for a bit. :-)

Belated Sunday Sketching -

We are back in town after a week away.. Am slowly getting caught back up (why??? is it SOOOO hard on ones' schedule to ever leave home?)

Super-DUPER quickie heads (like 2 minutes each) in the teensy purse Moleskine upon my knee...

Me and architecture (and straight lines on my lap) are not friends...

Sunday Sketching

Longer meeting - with nice talking heads to attempt -
Larger (5x8) pad upon my knee....

Figure Friday -

Life drawing and sleep deprivation do not mix... (note to self - there is no *point* in even going if I've had less than 6 hours of sleep. I cannot see proportions and cannot reproduce them for beans when getting less sleep than that...)

So anyhow... here's a few highly flawed short poses SO THAT I REMEMBER. No sleep = life drawing fail.
