WIP Wednesday - Garden Post!

It is spring break - so there are teenagers home this week.
You know what that means?

Hired garden help!

Very necessary - considering this minivan-sized pile of wood chips in my driveway...and the stack of bricks on the back patio....

See the busy-ness! the industry! The tireless adolescent muscles!

See my bricks and chips?! Good progress today. A few more hours tomorrow and the bulk of the 'heavy lifting' for this season will be done. Just ongoing planting, weeding and maintenance...

All that happy gardening stuff! :-)

Music Monday - Maybe It's You

Ok, so I just can't quite shake the last remnants of the sea... Reminds me of another atmospheric song that feels of sea spray and sunsets:
(this was always one of my favorite tracks on their "Close to You" album...)

May your week be filled with ocean-bird song and the pull of the tides...

Succulent Saturday - Retreat Part Last

Just a smattering of lovely, last looks....
(click on any of the photos for a closer view)

So many cool, water-weathered and gnarly roots...

Impressive cliff faces along the Sound - complete with a bald eagle coasting on the air currents.

Periwinkles sprinkled liberally every inch of the beach that is under water at some point. Mosses that even grow in briney water. The bones of old water-worn docks that resemble nothing short of dinosaur vertebrae.

And possibly my favorite part - the 'still life' arrangements one could find at low tide - assembled by accommodating mussels. Consisting of mussels, driftwood, pebbles, whelks (and whelk eggs!) and oyster shells. Each one is surprisingly more beautiful than the last and so artfully constructed. Even as artists - it's tough to compete with Mother Nature! (and if you want to see more amazing artful nature, see this post on the seastars that were visible at low tide over on our POBL blog).

Lovely, lovely time... And so long until our next retreat in the fall...

Succulent Saturday - Retreat Part V

One of the things our retreats are always good for is delicious food!

We had a sampling of raw and sprouted uber-healthy things to eat...

(I even brought my juicer and we juiced all kinds of delicious concoctions daily!)

The dinners were amazing! Both tasty -

- and beautifully (can I say, artfully?) arranged and presented.

Topped off with birthday-cake goodness!

Succulently Deee-lic-ious!

Figure Friday - Retreat Part IV

I did do a little bit of work amongst my resting and walks on the beach...

I started reading and working through this awesome book called Figure Drawing - Design and Invention by Michael Hampton. Very clear descriptions of various parts of the body and depicted in a number of different ways... And the many gestures and poses shown are very dynamic and exciting.

I used one of them to also play a bit with oil washes on unsealed paper in a very quick and dirty fashion. Trying to get a feel for it to see if I can be brave enough to use paint at some of the long-pose life drawing sessions we have.

But there was more figure painting to be seen....

A little ways down the beach was a darling little abandoned house that had the most cheerful and figurative graffiti I've ever seen! Nearly every wall was covered.

Most of the windows had been broken so some of the rooms were also wall-papered in ropes of ivy.

This apropos figure was painted in the remnants of the shower...

Octopi and flying pigs!

Looking out on the Sound amidst empty window frames and old buckled hardwood floors...

It is so charming even in its current form, it must have been a wonderful house when it was younger and more cared for.

WIP Wednesday - Retreat Part III

We usually have 'working' retreats -

We had a lovely space to 'work' in... whatever form that took...

There was research and sketching...

...quilting (aren't these batiks scrumptious?)...

...painting on silk....

...reading about, talking about and just thinking about art...

What else are retreats for?

Music Monday - Beyond the Sea (Retreat, Part II)

I spent the bulk of the retreat looking at, or walking along the water (an inlet of Puget Sound), so I am accompanying today's water-themed photos with this magically atmospheric version of "Beyond the Sea", sung by Celtic Woman:

This was our view of the Sound from our deck (tide going out)....

Entry to the beach (low tide) -

The neighboring cove (tide coming in...)

One of our many low-tide strolls along the rocky shore....

Exposed oyster bed (low low tide). Makes me start reciting 'The Walrus and the Carpenter"...

A sighting of the Olympics in the distance (tide coming back in) -

...and beautiful sunsets....

...every night....

...beyond the sea....

Spring Retreat - the Return...

*sigh*... coming back to Real Life can be so difficult...

...had a lovely weekend. Lots of resting and sky watching and walks along the beach....

Stay tuned.

Retreat Time -

My project has ended just in time for my critique group's biennial art-retreat. We'll be heading off to a place on the water for a long weekend of good food, great company and intense creating. Will report more upon our return.

Hope you are having a lovely weekend where ever you are!

WIP Wednesday - Garden Post!

Still breaking from the studio and trying to get caught up in other areas - today was *the garden*. I imported my mother for a week to help me do some decision making and long term planning. (After such a long push with this last project, my decision-maker is worn out. Or possibly broken...)

The raised beds are mostly cleaned out and prepped (nice, big trailer-full of manure spread last week). And if you look carefully to the left of the lower middle bed you can see some stakes in the grass marking where I want to add the next one. The corners are on order and the wood is being acquired.

The overwintering collards are starting to flower, so they are near their end... The chickens and I will fight for the last of them. The raspberry bed is all cleaned out (and I'm all scratched up) - and always looks worryingly sparse in the early spring. By June it's choked with canes and berries.

My baby dwarf fruit trees are nearly ready to blossom. I am also in the planning stages of a round, raised bed in the center of the lawn and have marked out the probable location of a green house. (The chickens watch on in frustration at me being out, and them being in. However, once I start planting seeds and sprinkling fertilizer and such, they are problematic to have out. They'll have to wait until June before being allowed out again).

Here is studio-dog, Jack, regally overlooking his backyard domain.

So happy to be back out in the yard with the growing things...

...Life is good.
