Succulent Saturday - more garden photos -

I got to go back to The Hermit's Grove today -
- this time to pick the caretaker's brain about my own gardens...

- I weeded alongside of him and took notes on all his words of wisdom and experience...

It was fun to see how much everything had grown just since last week -

-it has actually been sunny and kind of *warm* the last couple of days. Leaves! Flowers! Growing things!

And this was the most clever thing I've seen - our incredibly invasive and prolific blackberries, sort of topiaried and curtailed and wrapped in a 'wreath'. Easy to pick and easy to contain.

Inspiration right and left....

Mom - I know it's hard to tell from the bottom photo, but there are three 'mother' plants about equidistant apart with the chosen canes trained up a support (maybe 3 feet high?). At the top of the support the remaining length of canes is wrapped around in a circle - like a wreath - and tied in place. So the canes are all off the ground, at easy picking height and the deadly thorns are fairly contained. Genius!

very clever....

right now our weather sucks. First it zoomed up to 90 degrees so fast - well, I still had flannel sheets on the bed, that's how fast! We had 2 days of that, and one at 'only' 80. Then the swarms of evil biting black flies came out and left me lumpy, itching and in pain - despite having sprayed with DEET. Now the temp has plunged back into the 50s, and it's been raining for three days. Meanwhile, the weeds have all grown at least a foot, I kid you not! So annoying! And all of that happened in - one week.

The tiny black flies are a 2-week annual phenomenon, so one more to go.....
