OK - you've seen this one almost at this point - but I incorporated many of your comments. Thus far, this is the best positioning of the critters that I've come up with. It's still a bit tighter between the cow and donkey (and I don't love that the donkey is as truncated as he is) - but I don't really know what else to do - besides make them all smaller - which will leave too much space above the cow head.
Let me know if you think it is OK as is, or if more manuveuring needs to happen:

I love the clever way the animals nestle together in the composition! Especially the ram in the corner. Great drawing too.
