Inside the Mulino...

The inside of the mulino was charming and rustic - all stone walls and tiled floors, deep shuttered windows with ubiquitous geraniums, and the scent of freshly cut lilacs wafting throughout.

The left hand side of the building is actually three stories tall, connected by a very narrow, steep, wrought-iron spiral staircase. I was especially enamoured with the heavily beamed ceilings - where you could see the tiles of the floor above you straddling the beams.)

Our bedroom had beautiful, heavy wooden furniture - ornamented with Taber paintings and fresh flowers. We had lots of light - from a barred window and a double door which lead out to the patio in front of the mill. The girls would run down to that door in the mornings when they awoke and serenade us.

There were also a few other 'house guests'. When you had been out all day, you had to check the walls when you got home if you didn't want to be sleeping with the various centipedes or scorpions that emerged during the quiet. The girls were so soft-hearted that none of the found bugs were harmed, but captured and released outside.

The light, inside and out, was so beautiful! Everything looked like a painting, and it inspired creation on all sides. Both fairy nieces (and parents) were filling sketch book after sketch book with drawings. I brought mine with me, but apparently I have been drawing so much of the past 14 months or so, I didn't even pull it out. I took pictures instead. :-)

That last photo of your niece looks just like a Trina Schart Hyman illustration. I love it.

what a lovely rustic place! yikes on the 'house guest'! my dad used to be severely allergic to scorpions, and so when we visited family in mexico, he would go about in the evening with a black light and it would illuminate them so he didn't get an unwanted 'friend' and trip to the hospital!
