Sunday Sketching -

Christened my brand new Moleskine today at church (ok, pun not really intended). We sat further back in the room than normal so I had a broader view of the back-of-the-heads than usual. Still a rather small book to balance upon my knee, but such a nice surface to work on..

Speaking of the surface, it is such smooth, creamy paper - so the graphite smears quite easily. I drew this across both pages, so things will start rubbing quite quickly.

What do you Moleskine sketchers do to counter smeary graphite?

fab sketch!
I cut sheets of tracing paper / baking parchment to put between sheets to stop rubbing, and then elastic band the used portion of book together to stop loose leaves falling out. Does that make sense? not ideal, but it works ;)

Thanks for stopping by. I always appreciate it. My depression is improving though holidays make it tenuous so I'm going to work hard at having a balance between relaxing and accomplishing. I love the drawing. I've started dragging paper to church to capture ideas. Plus it seems to relax me when I can doodle. I did one back of head but these other ideas popped in my head so they came. Could you space a light coat of fixative on the pages? I use to use hair spray way back when, but that was when I lived in a little dinking town 100 years ago and you couldn't just get on the net and buy something :D

Sorry, I meant to say spray fixative. Obviously I typed my state of mind instead :D

In any sketchbook I like to draw with something that doesn't smear. I can't be around the smell of fixative for long. It aggravates my sinuses, even when dry so I don't use it. All my pencil drawings are done on loose pages, I scan them and then placed them in a file.

Give this a try and see if you like it, draw with a ball point pen. You can put down some light pencil lines and then draw over them if you like but it's possible to put in light pen lines as a start and then go darker and darker. Recently I combined pigma pens and ball point and it worked okay. I'll let you know when I post some of these.

I use a mechanical pencil with fairly hard lead. I highly recommend the Pentel Twist Erase .5.

Great sketch! I bought a moleskine sketchbook a month or so ago, but keep putting off making a mark on it. I'm goofy like that. Kudos to for jumping in and breaking your in.
