Judging Books by Their Covers -
A couple of weeks ago I was responding to a thread on cover art vs. literary content on the post When Right is Completely Wrong by author Jane Lindskold over on Tor.com. After adding my two cents in the comments section, I was asked by Heather, who runs The Galaxy Express, a blog devoted to science fiction romance books, to answer a few questions regarding cover art and appeal. After she assured me that she didn't mind that the genres I work in differ wildly from the one she is blogging about, I agreed. You can read her post which includes my interview here. And here's a few more snow shots because, Seattle - Is All About The Snow!

(You may notice that some of these are the same locales as yesterday, but since it snowed steadily all night, I thought it impressive to show the progression. Measured with my T-square, there is nearly 9 inches on the back deck. That is definitely a personal record for the last decade that I've lived in the Pacific Northwest).

For your seasonal enjoyment. (More lolcats here).

Ok - back at it
We had our first snowfall (actually our first real below-freezing weather period!) of the season last night.
I guess to make up for the temperate time we've been having thus far, the temperatures dropped about 30 degrees in a matter of hours. It is absolutely frigid out there. And supposed to be staying sub-freezing for days on end. (Unusual for our seasonal averages). I'm having to go out a couple of times a day to break the ice on the chicken's water.
I know, I know, we are totally cold-weather wimps here, but it is more impactful when you are not really acclimated (and barely have appropriate winter gear with which to deal with it). Snowfall and freezing temperatures are rare enough that there is only the barest minimum of street clearing/salting equipment and those only hit the major roads. The rest of us are stuck with treacherous, icy surfaces and little practice in dealing with them. More than a few inches of snow, and nearly everything closes down.
Well, I need to be staying *in* and working anyway, so as long as we keep power (always iffy when it storms) and Internet connection, there will be heat and light in the studio, hot tea and twitter to keep me company.
Back to painting. See you in a few weeks.

Where do I live anyway?
I thought it was the Pacific Northwest. You know - the place where it *rains* all the time, but NOT snow...?? We're having yet more of the suspect, icy, white stuff. Woke up to enough of it to cause school and business cancellations (even our garbage pick-up wimped out on us. Seattle is SO not equipped to deal with traditional winter.)I had to venture out onto the frosty roads to take my latest finished cover to the FedEx man - and even my close-by-local-drop-off was closed because of weather.
Having survived having to venture even further afield to find an open drop-off, I returned to that other place I seem to live - the studio. It is still January, and in honor of the new year, I really thought it ought to be somewhat cleaned. Since that is a fairly novel experience (a clean studio) of late, I'm photographically commemorating it for posterity, and lucky you can follow along this mini-tour-
Look! A cleaned desk! I can't tell you the last time that's happened (and it will only last until I finish this blog entry and pull out the next set of sketches) -
-newly framed by artsy origami lights, made for me by my son for Christmas. Thanks babe! :-)
As of *this minute* everything is back on its shelf and in its place -
- including the ultra-cool *bones* I received for Christmas! (Nothin' says "I love you" like a human skull reproduction from your dad. :-)
I didn't quite get all the way to my bulletin board - which is overflowing with 'treasures' (astute blog readers may recognize pieces of this crazy collage...)
See the too-cute bunny scissors! Love this kind of design - found on an art supply run...
And this basket is just indicative of the lovely things I am surrounding myself with - from so many of you lovely people out there - handmade books from Chantal, paper cutting from PG, darling felt mushroom from Julia, art cards from Joy and Carol, tin-of-treasures from Ulla - it goes on and on!
I may predominately 'live' here, but I am encompassed about by mementos and inspiration from so many kind, creative, supportive, like-minded people, I don't feel so isolated - even when house-bound by Seattle snow.

Happy December...
A new thing for us, having lived in the Pacific Northwest for nearly a decade - snow on the first of December! It started right after lunch with huge, wet, fluffy-feather flakes-
-that immediately began sticking on everything (luckily the roads stayed wet rather than snowy, or I would not have been at all happy to leave the house).
It was a grey twilight all afternoon, with heavy clouds dropping heavy, heavy flakes.
It was dark by the time I got home - and by now the roads were starting to slush and every surface had layer of snow on it.
It's now mid-evening and the snow continues to fall (they are predicting up until midnight at least, with various exciting storm variations over the next few days). We have 3 inches on our deck. I may have to take another picture before I go to bed.... which I hope is soon... I'm done tuckered out (the reports of my art adventures - Studios visited. Hanging art seen. Blogger artists met in person - will have to wait until another day.).... but I will stay up until my son returns from the wedding reception he is attending. After all, the roads are snowy now. On the first of December.Wednesday, May 30, 2007
Sunshine and 'snow'...

We're having record-breaking or near-record-breaking high temperatures here at the end of May... (see that *hot* sun bursting through our Big-Leaf Maples? Indigenous to this part of the country - they truly have BIG leaves. Larger than your head. Larger than a dinner plate! Too big to be pressed in any of my existing flower presses even.)

For our un-airconditioned Pacific NW houses, this means one must close all the curtains, run all the fans and try not to move to energetically, or you will get much too hot!

Another option is to take a walk through the 'snow' that is currently falling from the cotton trees... (It *looks* like it ought to be cool, at least)

I believe it was about this time last year that I posted about our late-spring 'snow' season. I've still yet to come up with a better descriptor than 'air decorations'... Still open to suggestions!!!

I loved the juxtaposition of 'snow' and bright green, new growth...

Oh the ironies...

After yesterday's sunny and working-in-the-garden post, I woke up to this, this morning.... (At least I wasn't tempted to go work in the garden today).

It snowed on and off wetly all day, and then started up again in earnest after dark - so now all the roads are icily-dangerous. The kids are bummed - they both have far-away band fieldtrips tomorrow (Victoria, BC and Centralia, WA). If we're lucky it will warm up a bit overnight and at least de-ice the roads...?
